Why we pour
what we pour
Two origins, one city, and a whole lot of decisions made before your cup ever hit the counter. Here's the short, fun version — plus a quiz to find your drink.
We pour two coffees. On purpose.
Most shops carry a wall of beans and hope you pick something. We carry two — one for espresso, one for drip — because each one is genuinely the right tool for its job. Here's what they are and why they're here.
Our drip
Ethiopia is coffee's homeland — the one place on earth where the arabica plant still grows wild in the forest. Kercha grows high and cool, which ripens the cherries slowly and builds real sweetness and brightness into the bean.
We keep it light so you actually taste the farm instead of the roaster. If you've only ever had coffee that tastes "roasty," this is the one that'll surprise you.
Our espresso & cold brew
Brazil grows more coffee than anywhere on the planet, and its beans lean naturally toward chocolate and nut with soft, gentle acidity. That's exactly what you want under milk.
A bright, delicate coffee disappears in a 16 oz latte. This one holds its own — which is why your mocha tastes like chocolate and not like a fight.
Find your Rosa drink
Four questions. No wrong answers. We'll land you on something you'll actually love.
Your coffee had a whole life before this
Here's the thing most people never hear: coffee isn't a bean. It's the seed of a fruit — a bright red cherry that grows on a flowering shrub that smells like jasmine. Nine steps stand between that shrub and your cup. We only control the last two.
Flower
White blossoms that smell like jasmine.
Cherry
The fruit ripens red. Two seeds inside.
Picked
Often by hand, cherry by cherry, at peak ripeness.
Processed
Fruit removed and dried — this alone changes everything about the taste.
Roasted
Where the flavor is actually created. Green beans taste like hay.
Yours
Ground and brewed by us, minutes before you drink it.
Why we grind fresh: whole beans stay good for weeks. Ground coffee starts fading in minutes — grinding exposes hundreds of times more surface to the air. That's why we won't pre-grind, even when there's a line.
Six things almost everyone gets wrong
Guess first. Then flip the card. Fair warning: number one has started arguments.
Four drinks you can only get here
Every one of them starts as a drink you already know. We just took it somewhere.
Grandma Rosa
Lavender and caramel. Floral, sweet and comforting — the one people come back for and the one they tell their friends about.
Motown Mocha
Michigan cherry and chocolate. Dark, a little tart, unmistakably from here.
Quiet Storm
Chamomile and honey over espresso. Soft, calm, low-key — for when you need focus without the buzz.
The Warrior
Cold brew, an extra espresso shot and vanilla cream. This is the one that gets things done.
Rosa was a real person
Rosa Malone's name is on this shop because the standard came from her kitchen first — the kind of hospitality where nobody leaves hungry and nobody feels like a stranger. Everything here is built to carry that forward.
That's also why we care so much about two bags of beans. A cup of coffee is the smallest possible way to take care of somebody. It's still worth doing right.
One room. Come sit in it.
Rosa Campus Café
Inside the Wayne State campus bookstore, right in the middle of everything. Fast and warm when you've got fifteen minutes between classes — and genuinely unhurried once the rush clears out.
Come by in the afternoon
Mornings we're moving. But after about 1:30 the room opens up, and that's when we've got time to hand you something new, tell you where it came from, and let you sit with it.
